Consonance

I enjoyed making an Inktober comic in 2023 so much (where each prompt inspired a panel) that I decided to do it again in 2024. This time, however, I wanted more than just a theme to tie the panels together. For this comic, inspired by the 2013 Tomb Raider video game I was playing at the time, I wrote a narrative using the prompts to guide the story (the decision to approach the comic in this way was made easier by the fact that the 2024 Inktober prompts all revolved around the theme of travel and adventure). “Consonance” is an 8-page story that follows the Crux family as they explore a temple in search for treasure rumored to be able to unite humankind.

The death of 1000 Futures

With this personal essay, I wanted to experiment with the writing and leading the eye, to see if I could create a path for the eye to follow from one caption to the next. Namely, I tried to use movement from the top of the page down, and moving back and forth across the images. While upon reflection I think it may have been a bit too ambitious, with the clarity suffering in places, overall I am happy with this 4-page comic as I tried to express the ideas surrounding the paths not taken as honestly as I could.

Dreams

In October 2023, I was in the process of moving from Toronto to London. I didn’t have time to do a full drawing for each day of Inktober, so I decided to make a comic where each day’s prompt inspired one or more panels.

And Yet the Birds Still Sing

A one-page comic adaption of a prose poem I wrote in 2023 about love and relationships.

Stop Waiting

If I’m being honest, in rebuilding my website I lost the original copy I had written to introduce each work. For the most part, it didn’t matter as I was able to remember the shorter descriptions. But for this one I had written something more extensive, and I don’t remember all the details. This is one of my earlier stories, when I was first getting back into drawing comics at the end of 2022 and it meant a lot to me at the time.

Here’s my best guess at what I was feeling then: I have been drawing on and off since I was a child. Even though I enjoyed it, there’d be periods of time when I’d stop, after I had become self-conscious and judged and thought what I was making wasn’t very good. But I always returned. And since this last return, probably around 2018, I have stayed the course, continuing to practice and study and enjoy making art. I have always loved reading comics and even made some when I was young, but I never thought I could do more with it, take it seriously. So I made this comic in the hopes of motivating others to stop waiting to do the things you’ve wanted to do but didn’t for whatever reason—the fear of being judged, the fear of failure, whatever else. Stop waiting to do the right thing; stop waiting to be kind; stop waiting for the perfect time to pursue something—it most likely doesn’t exist. There are always reasons not to do something. What matters most is that we do that which brings meaning into our lives and the lives of others; so if there’s something you’ve been putting off—stop waiting!

Trust Your Wings
